Are Toxic Chemicals Making You Fat?

Are Toxic Chemicals Making You Fat?

Most people agree that toxins can easily be found in places like the landfill, chemical plants and a sewer system.  And since you are a normal person, you could not possibly be toxic because you don’t hang out in those areas on a regular basis, right?  But how many of you know that you can pick up toxins anywhere; from a food you have eaten to something you inhaled or something you put on your body like chemicals in your daily routine?  In fact, most women put over 80 chemicals on or in their body before they leave their home in the morning!  Soaps, deodorants, make-up, shampoos and conditioners just to name a few.  And some of the most common toxins impacting our bodies today can be found in our beloved coffee drinks!  Not saying coffee is toxic, just saying it is a common ingested item where some of my clients have found toxins that we needed to clear.

These chemicals get into your bloodstream and can cause harm to many different body systems from the respiratory system to the lymphatic system, the digestive system and on and on.  You might have experienced the obvious toxin when you ate a meal and found yourself ill after eating.  The toxin could be from any number of chemicals used to cook the foods like toxic oils, toxic cookware or even food grown using chemicals and fertilizers.  If you only eat organic, that is a great step to avoiding toxins.  However, beware, even organic farms may receive run-off from other farms and that is where a toxin could still be picked up.

These chemicals may lock into different body parts, organs and especially the endocrine glands.  These glands are responsible for communicators that we call hormones.  They regulate thousands of body functions and especially the communication to the brain telling your body whether you are satisfied or whether you feel like you are starving even when you just ate!

What if your weight maintenance journey has been locked down by these chemicals or endocrine disruptors, in particular, one called an Obesogen?  Yep, that’s right.  A chemical you picked up without even knowing it can lock down your hormones and send improper signaling to the brain.  These can cause endocrine system disruptions, immune and nervous system damage, reproductive and developmental harm.  Did you know that sometimes it is not even about the toxins you were exposed to, but also the toxins your ancestors may have been exposed to that created an epigenetic marker and passed through to you?  Perhaps an ancestor from a war that was exposed to nerve gas or a pesticide chemical from farming. Could this be the reason your weight and metabolism have been off for years with little to no success?

How do know if you have a toxin?  Some signs may include feeling tired and fatigued, skin rashes, headaches, chronic mucous production, joint pain, a weakened immune system just to name a very small list.  This would be a clue.  Watch this Purification video to learn more about what kind of toxins you might be exposed to on a given day and the full list of impact to your body.

The great news is you may now know the reason for your list of symptoms.  Together, we can do something to address it through a Weight and Metabolism Body Scan.  In this process, we will be able to identify if you have any chemical toxicity impacting your success in achieving your proper weight and metabolism.  Just for fun, I am including a toxicity questionnaire that you can take and share with your friends.  Maybe even have a New Year’s Contest to see who has the greatest toxin load. Probably not the award you want for the new year, right?

To learn more about your toxin burden and to clean up your act follow these suggestions:

  1. Complete the Toxicity Questionnaire and fax (866-433-0007) or email to my office.
  2. Schedule your personal Weight and Metabolism Scan to make sure toxins did not shut down your communication pathways to your brain signaling inappropriate hunger.
  3. Complete the 21 Day Purification Program (On Sale now through January 31, 2018)
  4. Start reducing toxins in your home.  Learn more about:
    1. Toxin Free Household Cleaners
    2. Toxin Free Personal Care Products
    3. Toxin Free Make-up

These are just a few suggestions to help you clean up in the new year!  Contact my office for additional guidance through this process.  All of the above can be provided in person or long distance through video conferencing.

How Much Sugar Do You Really Eat?

How Much Sugar Do You Really Eat?

You might be surprised to learn the foods that “qualify” as sugar in your diet.  If I were to ask most people how much sugar they eat, they would consider the candy or soda they consumed in the last week and more than likely assume their diet is low in sugar.  But what about the rest of your diet that you may not categorize as sugar?

Consider that our consumption of fructose (a.k.a. High Fructose Corn Syrup) has doubled in the past 30 years and has increased 6-fold in the last century.  It’s cheap and easy to hide in foods and takes the place of the flavor of “fats” in our food which allowed the Fat-Free diet craze.  That’s why those Fat-Free foods taste so good!  You will find it (high fructose corn syrup) in yogurt, breads, frozen pizza, pasta, cereal bars, jam, soda, cereal, boxed macaroni & cheese, salad dressing, tomato sauces, applesauce, canned fruit etc.

Now let me ask the question again.  How much sugar do you really eat?  I encourage you to watch the video below regarding how to address purifying your body of sugars and other toxins in 21 days.  In this video, you will see a shocking example of the amount of sugar you may actually be eating in a given day!

When you eat too much of the kinds of foods referenced above you may start to experience:

  • Quick absorption of these foods and storing them as fat tricking your metabolic hormones
  • Destruction of Leptin sensitivity (Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain whether you are starving or satisfied)
  • Increased inflammation
  • Increased opportunity to develop obesity, diabetes, metabolic disease

And what if you got addicted to the carbs in the process?  This can happen due to special preservatives used in foods today that won’t allow you a fighting chance.  I call this the potato chip technique.  It's easier to have the potato chip company get you to buy a second bag than for a non-chip eater to buy the first bag.  There are actually preservatives that help increase the cravings and make you want to consume more chips.  How’s that going to support your diet plans?

There are a number of ways to start reversing the damage from eating too many carbohydrates.

  1. Purification Program - Only takes 21 days to turn this trend around.  Order Now and receive a discount through January 31, 2018.  Order Now
  2. Drink more water which can assist in tricking Leptin into believing you are satisfied.
  3. Take herbs to counter the carbohydrate cravings - Gymnema (Included in 21 Day Purification Program above). Other products that curb cravings and help with appetite control are Slique® products by Young Living. Slique products are designed to support healthy weight-management efforts.
  4. Reduce Stress - Stress increases hormones that make your body crave sugar!
  5. Hormone balancing through BodyTalk sessions to clear insulin resistance or insulin over-production.

Contact my office if you have questions regarding any of the above.

Find out if you can benefit from the purification program! Our toxicity questionnaire will help your practitioner assess your potential need for the purification program or other Standard Process or Med

iHerb® products. The toxicity questionnaire only takes a few minutes of your time. Save as a pdf, print or email your results to yourself and our office, and contact me for a consultation.

What’s In This? Part II, Avoid the “Dirty Dozen”

Posted In:
Articles | Blog

Last month I shared with you Part I about toxins in our body care products. Now let’s continue with Part II and find out what toxins to avoid.

toxins-in-body-carePropylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol:  Found in Anti-freeze.  Acts as a “surfactant11 (wetting agent and solvent).  Penetrates skin and weakens protein and cellular structure.  Strong enough to remove barnacles from boats!  The EPA considers PG so toxic that workers are required to wear protective clothing and to dispose of PG by burying it in the ground.  PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns against contact to prevent brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.  But there isn’t even a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is greater than is most industrial applications.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES):  Detergents that pose serious health threats.  Used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and in 90% of personal care products that foam. Animals exposed to SLS experience eye damage, depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation and even death.  Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS.  May damage the skin’s immune system.  Can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens.  Your body may retain SLS for up to five days and maintain residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain.

DEA (diethanolamine) MEA (Monoethanolaniie) & TEA (triethanolamine):  Hormone-disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing nitrates.  Restricted in Europe due to carcinogenic effects, yet they are still used in the U.S. Americans may be exposed 10-20 times per day with shampoos, shaving creams and bubble baths.  Dr. Samuel Epstein (processor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois) says that repeated applications of DEA-based detergents result in major increase in liver and kidney cancer.  The PDA’s John Bailey says, “The risk is significantly increased for children.”

Sodium Hydroxide: The most recent addition to our personal care products.  This is poison (caustic lye) found in drain cleaners, yet is now found in our children and adult toothpaste!

Triclosan: Synthetic “antibacterial” with a chemical structure-similar to Agent Orange!  The EPA registers it as a pesticide, giving it high scores as a risk to human health and the environment.  It is in a class of chemicals suspected of causing cancer in humans.  It may produce dioxin, a hormone-disrupting chemical with toxic effects measured in the parts per trillion; that is only one drop in 300 Olympic-size swimming pools!  Hormone disrupters pose enormous long-term chronic health risks.  It can change genetic material, decrease fertility and sexual function, and foster birth defects.  Internally it can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse and convulsions.  Stored in body fat, it can accumulate to toxic levels, damaging the liver, kidneys and lungs, and can cause paralysis, brain hemorrhages and heart problems. Tufts University School of Medicine says Triclosan can force the emergence of “super bugs” that it cannot kill.  Its widespread use in antibacterial cleansers, toothpastes and household products may have nightmarish implications on future generations.

DMDM & Urea (Imidazolidinyl): Two of many preservatives that often release formaldehyde which cause joint pain, skin reactions, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep.  Exposure also irritates the respiratory system, triggers heat palpitations or asthma and aggravates cough and colds.  Other side effects include weakening the immune system and cancer.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG):  Carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that reduces the skin’s natural moisture.  Increases the appearance of aging and leaves you vulnerable to bacteria.  Used in spray-on oven cleaners and cleansers to dissolve oil and grease.

Liutane or Propane:  Found in aerosol products.  May be narcotic and cause asphyxiation.

Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40):  Drying, irritating solvent that strips skin’s moisture and immune barrier, making you vulnerable to bacteria and viruses.  Made from a petroleum derivative found in shellac and antifreeze as well as personal care products.  Promotes brown spots and premature aging.  A consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients says it may cause headaches, flushing, dizziness, mental depression, nausea, vomiting and coma.  Fatal ingested dose is one ounce or less.

Mineral Oil:  Petroleum by-produce that coats the skin like plastic wrap, clogging the pores.  Interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders.  Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging.  Baby oil is 100% mineral oil!

FD&C Color Pigments:  Synthetic colors from coal tar that deposit toxins onto the skin, causing skin irritation. Absorption of certain colors can cause depletion of oxygen in the body and death.  Animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic.

Fragrances:  Can contain up to four thousand ingredients (including animal urine), many toxic or carcinogenic.  Causes headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing, vomiting and skin irritation.  Fragrances affect the nervous system, causing depression, hyper activity, irritability, inability to cope and other behavioral changes.

What’s In This? Part I - Are There Toxins In Your Body Care Products?

Posted In:
Articles | Blog | Health News

Recently, I read an article in HealthKeepers Magazine about toxins in our body care products.  This is what it said and I agree that we should use more natural and organic personal care products for a healthier body.

body-care-toxinsPersonal care products are supposed to make us beautiful.  But have you read the list of ingredients on the label of your favorite shampoo, body wash, moisturizer, cosmetics or lotion recently?  Have you come across chemical names like phthalates, triclosan, paraben or sodium laureth sulfate?  What are these substances and what are they doing in these products that go directly on your skin?

Our body’s biggest organ is the skin.  It’s your most important immune defense barrier as well as your largest organ for eliminating waste.  Did you know that many chemicals found in body care products pass easily through the skin and tissues into the blood stream, which carries them throughout the body?  While we have wonderful detoxification capabilities for eliminating harmful toxins, today there are so many synthetic chemicals assaulting our bodies from the air, water and food that we are experiencing toxic overload.  Unable to adequately process and excrete the overwhelming number of incoming toxins, our bodies store them in our tissues, especially in our fat cells.  This creates an ever-growing accumulation of toxins which can interfere with our normal biochemical processes and can eventually produce diseases or worse.

Toxins found in body care products generally fall into these categories:  Neurotoxins; endocrine disrupters; irritants and allergens; and kidney and/or liver poisons.  They’ve been linked with all kinds of disease, including infertility and birth defects; asthma and respiratory failure, convulsions; circulatory collapse; anemia; skin problems like acne, eczema and psoriasis; nervous system disorders like Parkinson’s and ALS; chemical sensitivity; and cancer.

Watchdog groups such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and researchers at Vassar College are finding that these culprits are found in the following chemical groups:  phthalates, triclosan, paraben and musks.  Byproducts of these substances such as sodium sulfate and 1, 4-dioxide are suspected carcinogens.

When you consider the fact that we use an average of nine body care products a day which contain an average of 126 different synthetic chemicals, which are not all poisons, but many toxic enough to do serious damage to your health-you have to ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?  What’s in these products?”

What can you do about this?  Vote with your dollar.  Carefully read the list of ingredients on product packaging to stay away from these chemicals.  Suggest to your local pharmacy and supermarket that they carry more natural and organic personal care products or visit your local health food or natural product store to find healthier alternatives.

In next month’s article, look for Part II and get the “Dirty Dozen”.  Find out what toxins to avoid.

Standard Process Cleanse

Standard Process Cleanse

Did you know there are literally thousands of chemicals and toxins that are registered in the United States?  Hundreds of these chemicals are present in our bodies according to the Centers for Disease Control.    These toxins and chemicals can have massive disruptions to our body systems causing a number of health issues.

So what toxins are you and your family using daily?  Here’s a short list.  Water pollution, cosmetics, household cleaning products, pesticides and herbicides, pharmaceuticals, food preservatives, caffeine, ammonia and this is just a short list.

Toxins can contribute to a wide range of conditions such as reduced mental clarity, low libido, digestion issues, weight gain, food cravings etc. The Standard Process Purification Program can help remove toxins from the body and reduce or eliminate symptoms such as these.   This program stimulates specific detox organs such as the liver, kidneys and intestines.   Each of these organs plays a major role in cleansing specific toxins from the body while preparing the body for transporting necessary nutrients for the body to utilize.

The Standard Process Purification Program takes just 21 days to complete.  It involves eating whole organic food, eliminating processed foods, drinking plenty of water and incorporating the use of whole food supplementation to assist with the cleansing process and re-building of healthy cells from former habits.  Refraining from certain toxins such as caffeine, alcohol and tobacco products also contribute to a purifying process.  Certain dietary restrictions apply as well such as the elimination of dairy, nuts and most grains and refined foods.

Read here to learn more about how the Standard Process Purification Program has helped people eliminate arthritic symptoms and lower key health markers such as blood pressure, blood glucose, etc.

Find out if you can benefit from the purification program! Our toxicity questionnaire will help your practitioner assess your potential need for the purification program or other Standard Process or MediHerb® products. The toxicity questionnaire only takes a few minutes of your time. Print or email your results, and contact me for evaluation.

GALLBLADDER, GAS AND BLOATING? by Dr. Bruce West

Posted In:
Articles | Blog | Diet/Nutrition | Health News | Newsletter | Supplements

Are you chronically nauseous? How about constipated? Or constipated with diarrhea? Or do you constantly have the uurps and burps-where fatty foods repeat on you and even get back into your throat? Are you chronically bloated with gas and pressure? Or have you even had one or more “gallbladder attacks?”

These are all symptoms of gallbladder problems-including a sluggish gallbladder and a congested liver. But take heart. The miracle treatment of the month is betaine. Betaine is one of the factors in the B vitamin complex. And the richest source is found in growing beet leaves and their juice. Betaine is known as a lipotrophic agent-it aids in fat digestion and metabolism.

Standard Process makes a product called A-F Betafood. It contains vitamins A and F complexes combined with Betafood, which contains betaine from beet leaf juice. The vitamins A and F thin the bile, while Betafood flushes the bile route-getting it moving again. Without adequate nutrition like this, your bile becomes thick like cream. Thick, congested bile does not flow smoothly, and eventually clogs, forming gravel of even gallstones. When this happens, you are in trouble with all the symptoms listed-including an eventual, inevitable gallbladder attack.

When you have chronic gallbladder problems such as these, you are also sure to be toxic. Aside from helping you break down fats for digestion, smoothly flowing bile is a major detoxifier. Toxins are picked up and carried in your blood to your liver. Your liver is like your car’s filter. The liver removes the toxins from the blood and dumps them into the bile. The bile then carries them to the intestines for elimination.

So if you have these problems, be sure to take 2-4 A-F Betafood capsules with water at mealtime. This protocol will help you thin bile that has become thick and less viscous. It will also help you flush the bile route from the liver through the gallbladder. Once this is accomplished, your symptoms will begin to disappear. And better yet, you most likely will be able to save yourself from a gallbladder attack, or worse-removal of your gallbladder.

And take special note-millions of Americans suffer from celiac disease and do not know it. Celiac disease is an intolerance to the protein gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Some of the symptoms of celiac disease mimic those of gallbladder problems. So make sure to eliminate gluten from your diet for at least 30 days to determine if you suffer from hidden celiac disease. If gluten is your problem, you will be better within days of eliminating it from your diet. Untold thousands of people who had undiagnosed celiac disease have had their gallbladder removed-only to find out that their symptoms continued after surgery!

Avoid Symptom Treatment

If you have already had your gallbladder removed, remember that surgery simply corrects the symptom and does nothing about the cause. Your sluggish and congested bile will remain a problem, even after gallbladder surgery. After gallbladder removal, you still need to use the A-F Betafood protocol to improve your bile flow and fat digestion and metabolism, as well as to insure proper detoxification and removal of toxins from your body.

And once you start to clean up your liver/gallbladder/bile pathways, you can use a once-or twice-a-year gallbladder cleanse to make your protocol even more powerful. A gallbladder cleanse involves mixing 2 cups of shredded, raw, preferably organic, ripe beets with the juice of a lemon and 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin, first-pressed olive oil. Eat this mixture between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner daily for 10 days.

It is best to do everything you can to avoid having your gallbladder removed. Too many older adults have had this procedure start a downward medical spiral that often leads to debilitation and even death. Remember that simply having a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) only treats the symptoms. And the only medical treatments for gallbladder problems consist of a low-fat diet, drugs to mask symptoms, or surgery. It is all ineffective, sometimes dangerous, and expensive (gallbladder and knee surgeries keep most hospitals financially afloat).

Uurps, burps, gas, bloating, nausea, pain, constipation, diarrhea, and gallbladder attacks? Use A-F Betafood and a gallbladder flush to thin the bile and flush your liver and gallbladder-and put an end to being sick and in pain. Treating the cause-and all without side effects of any kind. Now that’s a protocol, and the miracle, secret treatment of the month. To order A-F Betafood or any of the products mentioned in this article, contact us.
