Heartburn Quiz

Got Heartburn?  Get Relief…Naturally!

Did you know that it is estimated that 1 out of 3 experience heartburn?  What are the causes of heartburn?  Are antacids safe or are there other natural alternatives?

True or False? Heartburn is due to too much acid in the stomach

FALSE!  There are many misunderstandings about stomach acid and most patients, including some doctors, incorrectly believe heartburn is due to excess stomach acid.  In fact, it is caused by too little stomach acid!  This seems to happen more often as we age. (*1, *2)

The Physiology:  In normal digestion, food enters the stomach and “Gastrin” is produced which signals the cells in the gastric folds called “Parietal Cells” to produce HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) which is then secreted up from these gastric pits.  This, in turn, stimulates the mucous producing cells to release mucus and bicarbonate in order to protect the stomach lining from erosion.

What happens when the HCL is not strong enough?  Poor mucous production and stomach lining is susceptible to erosion and inflammation.  In addition, the Esophageal Sphincter (which keeps the food from returning up the esophagus) does not close tightly enough and can allow stomach contents to splash up the esophagus causing GERD, spasms, even a Hiatal Hernia or other more serious conditions.

True or False? Antacids are completely safe and won’t interfere with my health

FALSE!  Taking antacids can pose serious health risks including increased osteoporosis, dementia, severe B12, Folic Acid, Calcium/Magnesium deficiencies.  Even having low stomach acid alone has been associated with depression, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, stomach cancer, anemia, psoriasis, rosacea and much more  (*3, *4, *5, *6)

In addition, you need strong stomach acid in order to absorb minerals and certain vitamins in addition to breaking down protein. When proteins don’t break down they can putrefy and alter the balance of your flora in the gut.  This can lead to bacterial overgrowth, dysbiosis, yeast infections and more.

True or False? There is no solution and I just have to live with it

FALSE! Help is just a step away.  Increase HCL production or add Zypan Tablets 2-5 with each meal.  It will surprise you how well this simple product works.  This product by Standard Process was introduced in 1958 and helped countless patients.

All Stomach Acid is not the Same

All Stomach Acid is not the SameLow Hydrochloric acid

By: Lynn Morales, ND

Its true!

There are good stomach acids and there are bad ones.  The question is which one will make your digestion operate smoothly without pain, gas, bloating, acid reflux and a host of other items.

All stomach acids are not the same.  Some acid  is actually causing food to putrefy.  That would be rotten protein or meat.  Some acid is actually rancid.  This means the stomach has no means of digesting fats and they are literally rotting in your gut.  Some acids are evidence that you are not breaking down or processing your carbohydrates.  This is called fermentation.  None of these sound very good yet at least one of these is most often the real culprit behind acid reflux, gas and bloating.  If these symptoms are happening to you, that is exactly what is happening.  that is gross isn’t it.

So why do our doctors so often tell us that we have too much stomach acid?

The reasons are the three forms of rotting mentioned above.  It is actually a lack of good acid that is causing your body to create bad or unhealthy acid.  Hydrochloric acid and pepsin are the good acids I am speaking of and they are very necessary for our body to properly digest proteins, carbohydrates and fats.  When we eat a lot of processed foods and don’t have the proper enzymes to break our food down our stomachs are unable to produce enough good acid to break down our food.  So picture a steak in 98.6 degree heat.  How long before it starts to rot or putrefy?  Not very long.  So imagine that steak sitting in your stomach and not being digested easily.  It begins to putrefy and THAT acid is what is backing up in your system.  Doesn’t that make a lot of sense?

So, there are a couple of options to combat this issue that are very simple.  One is a tablespoon apple cider vinegar 15 minutes before meals.  If that makes it worse, you could have an ulcer.  For best results, contact me for more information on my 10 day digestive cleanse and see what a difference just 10 days can make.

Is There a Stomach Cure?

Correcting problems in the stomach can help improve your health.  You can improve your immune system, vision and memory by increasing stomach acid.  A common diagnosis of bloating, gas, indigestion and heartburn is too much acid in the stomach and antacids are used to eliminate the pain but it just makes it worse.

Your problem may be low acid.  Stomach acid is required for the digestion of food.  As you get older, your stomach will reduce its levels of acid production.  Here are some facts you need to know about stomach acid:

  • Most indigestion is caused by low stomach acid instead of too much acid.
  • Stomach acid is needed to absorb the nutrients your body needs.
  • A low-salt diet can cause low stomach acid and weaken your immune system.
  • Antacids in older people can increase the chance of getting pneumonia due to low stomach acid.
  • Stomach acid kills harmful bacteria in the body.
  • Low stomach acid is the main cause of acid indigestion, intestinal damage, malabsorption syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, candidiasis, and dysbiosis (abnormal gut flora).

One way to improve and maintain good stomach acid production is to take Zypan produced by Standard Process.  This is a premiere digestive enzyme containing hydrochloric acid and pancreatic enzymes to facilitate healthy digestion.  Take Zypan with meals, eliminate process foods, switch to Celtic Sea Salt, and drink plenty of water to help produce an adequate amount of stomach acid to maintain good health.

Learn more about digestion and ways to improve your health.  To improve your stomach acid order your Zypan today!
