For the Best Diet Advice, Look to the East

By Jason Bussell

Compare the shape of the average American to the average Asian and you will be reminded that America, with all of its diet fads, is the most obese nation in the world. Chinese culture, on the other hand, has adhered to a diet plan of balance and moderation that we can all practice to live healthier. The various cuisines of Asian countries are very different but they all adhere to the same principles-a diet of simple whole grains, slightly-cooked vegetables and a little bit of everything else. Too much or too little of any one thing is not good.

All foods have upsides and downsides. A good diet should be like a good stock portfolio-diversified. Having the same thing every day overloads you in one sector. That makes you more prone to the dangers of that sector and missing out on all the other good things happening in the market. So like a good portfolio, you should hedge your bets. Eating smaller amounts of more foods ensures no single one has too great an influence.

White rice is better than brown. Brown rice has a thick hull around it. This is similar to eating a walnut with its shell on. The nutrients in the hull have a poor bio-availability. Our bodies have to break down the shell, which robs energy and slows our metabolisms. But a variety of grains is better than any one. Simple grains should be taken more than breads and pastas.

Cooked vegetables are better than raw. It is true that cooking slightly will destroy a little of the nutrients (about 10%), but that remaining 90% is then unlocked and available. Whatever you put in your stomach that is cold and raw, you have to heat and cook. This takes time, energy and slows your metabolism. We get all of our energy from our food. We want to get the energy and life out of it and excrete that which we don’t need. Cooking outside the body lightens the load and then we simply act as a filter: sending the good stuff to the tissues, the bad to the tissue paper. We should eat a wide variety of vegetables, mostly locally grown, fresh and organic.

Calories don’t matter. The average person in China consumes between 25-40% more calories than the average American, but they have much less obesity. This is because of the kinds of calories they consume and how they are prepared. Calories from natural sources give you a more steady release of energy, satisfy your hunger and facilitate appropriate elimination of waste. Cookies, snack foods, artificial sweeteners, sodas, etc, spike our blood sugars, make us hungrier and slow our digestion. Don’t go hungry, just keep yourself full of good, natural food.

Eat a little red meat. Eating too much red meat is associated with myriad health problems. Vegetarians almost have it right, but giving up meat completely will almost always lead to a long-term deficiency. Chinese medicine specifically recommends we get two ounces, twice a week of mammal meat. One famous Chinese doctor wrote that “Vegetarianism is best suited to monks, living in the shelter of a temple, spending their days in seated meditation.” Those of us with a more active lifestyle need a little more of an active food source. Fish and fowl are good too, but we need a little mammal in the rotation. White meat is not better than dark-chicken is not better than beef. We should have a little of most things.

Minimize Dairy. Dairy is designed by nature for infants to turn into substance in the body. Humans are the only animals that have dairy after infancy. Dairy does not have calcium, but it is overwhelmed by the amino acid casein that actually robs the bones of calcium. Green leafy vegetables are a much better source of calcium for our bodies, with fewer ill effects.

Chinese medicine teaches that in adults, dairy turns into a substance called phlegm. Phlegm can manifest in many different ways: fat, mucus, sinus infections, mental fog, respiratory problems, skin conditions and even fibroids and tumors. A little dairy won’t kill you, but a lot of it is not good. Your primary beverage should be water (room or body temperature) and your number two beverage should be green tea. Everything else, including coffee, should be occasional.

Try to put these principles to use in your diet and your family’s diet to see the benefits. Trust what has worked for millennia. Keep it simple, balanced and moderate.

ECZEMA AND YOUR GUT

By Dr. Bruce West

Eczema and Your Gut

If you are plagued with eczema, you know just how frustrating and debilitating this condition can be. You try everything-all the creams, lotions, and potions - to no avail. You finally turn to steroids, which immediately improve your condition, but slowly destroy your body and health in the process. You are disappointed to discover that almost to the day that you stop steroid therapy, your eczema comes back. But even worse, chronic steroid use causes dysbiosis (abnormal gut flora), which is the prime cause of eczema!

This situation is true even for infants and children. Infants inherit their gut flora from their mothers. Since millions of mothers suffer from dysbiosis, millions of infants suffer from eczema right from the start. For infants, kids, and adults the gut flora-that thick, beneficial-bacteria layer that covers your intestinal lining-is the very cradle of your immune system.

When this flora and the intestinal lining become damaged from prescription drugs, antibiotics, sugary and processed foods, and chemicals, dysbiosis (the overgrowth of harmful bacteria) is the result. Chronic indigestion, diarrhea, cramps, constipation, colitis, Crohn’s disease and more are the direct result of dysbiosis. But more insidious is that the immune system becomes damaged, and you end up becoming immune compromised.

In simple terms, your immune system is divided into two divisions known as T-cell type 1 and T-cell type 2. T-cell type 1 serves as a barrier to infection and invasion anywhere the body comes in contact with the outside world-for example, through the skin and mucous membranes. This system uses biochemicals such as interleukin-2, immunoglobulin A, gamma interferon, and more to keep invaders out of your body.

When you develop dysbiosis (abnormal gut flora), this system is weakened, letting foreign microbes and toxins into your body. Your body responds by over stimulating the T-cell type 2 system. This system kicks into high gear using its own set of biochemicals such as interleukins, alpha interferon, and immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE is the master of allergic reactions.

Once this scenario takes place-when T-cell 1 is underactive, allowing foreign invaders into your body, and T-cell 2 kicks into high gear, the result is predictable. You end up with chronic viral infections, allergies (often severe and to everything), chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, asthma, and eczema. Other dysbiosis syndromes include, but are not limited to, arthritis; chronic inflammation and pain; menstrual problems; mental and emotional problems including, but not limited to, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, autism, schizophrenia syndrome, and depression; and much more.

So if you suffer from chronic eczema, you need to fix your gut. It is difficult to overestimate just how critical the state of your gut flora is when it comes to all these dysbiosis syndromes, including eczema. Most of the syndromes spring from severe nutritional deficiencies that come automatically when your gut is host to happily growing abnormal bacteria. When this is the case, your gut simply cannot absorb the nutrients your immune system and your body need to stay healthy and strong-no matter how good your diet is, or how many “vitamins” you take.

Cure Dysbiosis to Cure Eczema

You have to normalize your gut and give it what it needs to bring back a healthy and normal flora. Only then will you be able to finally balance your immune system, turn up your T-cell 1 system, and turn down your T-cell 2 system. Normalizing your gut will start to turn off the over stimulated and allergic reactions in your skin and body. And once your gut is on the way towards normalization, you will slowly recover from the major, powerful, and multiple nutritional deficiencies that cause endless suffering for all persons with dysbiosis. With a normalizing gut, and the proper nutrition, you will once again be able to absorb the nutrients needed to end eczema, allergies, and all the other nutritional deficiency syndromes from which most Americans suffer.

So start today. For a detailed protocol to end dysbiosis, see my article, “Digestion, the Gut, and Disease,” in this issue of Health Alert. At the very least, begin to help yourself by changing your diet immediately. Eat only real, whole foods, no processed foods, and give your gut a rest by eliminating all gluten (anything made from wheat, rye, barley, and oats) for 6 months. Start taking a pro-and prebiotic to feed your gut the healthy, beneficial bacteria that it needs. We have identified the very best product as ProSynbiotic from Standard Process. It contains not only the beneficial bacteria (probiotic) you need, but the prebiotic (food for the beneficial bacteria) as well-all in one capsule. Take one capsule 3x daily for a year or more.

If you suffer from eczema, once you start to normalize your gut, be sure to take Blue Ice™ Fermented Cod Liver Oil (CLO) to get the skin nutrition you need. Take 3 capsules daily for a year or more. Better yet, take this supplement for life as it contains all the vitamin D fractions in their natural form, with real vitamin A and omega-3 fats. This is skin, heart, and hormone rocket fuel.

Potions, lotions, creams, salves, steroids, ultra violet, antibiotics, and more for eczema? The underlying cause is in your gut-creating the immune system imbalance and the nutritional deficiencies that ensure eczema for life. If you are suffering, then absolutely, for sure, without a doubt, follow the protocol in “Digestion, the Gut, and Disease.” It will simply be the start of a new life for you.

For Any Illness-Stop the Wheat and Suspect Your Prescriptions

By Dr. Bruce West

What do these three patients of ours have in common? One is a 70-year-old woman who suffered with epilepsy and seizures for 50 years. These came to an abrupt end within one week of starting treatment. The second is a 60-year-old woman who could not stop her bone loss from osteoporosis, despite the proper diet, lifting weights, and taking bone-building supplements. Her osteoporosis and continuing bone loss reversed itself within 90 days of starting treatment. The last is a 65-year-old who suffered through severe fatigue and what she called “being spacey,” confused, and unable to concentrate-for more than 25 years. It all ended within one week of starting treatment.

What these three patients shared in common was that they all suffered from celiac disease and did not know it. Celiac disease occurs when your body cannot tolerate gluten-a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. For celiac patients, gluten breaks down the lining of the intestines, interfering with digestion and absorption-leading to multiple nutritional deficiencies. None had the classic symptoms of bloating, nausea, gas, diarrhea, constipation, or weight loss. And none had been tested for or diagnosed with celiac disease.

They all got better simply because we stumbled onto their problems by trying a protocol I use with almost every patient-eliminating all gluten for 30 days. Two were immediately cured, and the third felt so much better that she continued to eliminate gluten from her diet and eventually overcame incurable osteoporosis.

The moral of the story is if you suffer from any illness at all, you must eliminate gluten from your diet for 30 days, simply to test the possibility that this protein is destroying your health. Estimates are that close to 1 in 133 Americans has celiac disease. And most do not know it. It is tough to diagnose because according to modern medicine, a biopsy of the intestinal lining is the only true diagnostic procedure. Of course, this is invasive, and by the time the intestinal lining is being destroyed, celiac disease is far advanced.

It is just so much better, makes so much more sense, and is classic evidence-based medicine to simply eliminate gluten from your diet and see how you feel. If you are remarkably better, biopsy or not, you have hit the nail on the head.

Prescriptions Also

These three patients all suffered from the same-somewhat unusual-underlying cause of their problems. However, for literally thousands of our other patients, we helped them find a much more common underlying cause of their problems by simply examining their prescriptions. And the lesson here is even simpler: No matter what symptoms you have, always suspect that your prescription drugs are the underlying cause of your problem until proven otherwise.

In fact, no home should be without a drug handbook to look up prescription medications. When you find that your problems are listed as a side effect from a drug that you take, it is an obvious tip off. This is particularly true for cardiac drugs. And if you take more than two drugs, your problem may not be listed under either drug because it could be caused by the combination. By the time you take three or more drugs, there is not a human being on the planet who can determine just what may be going on in your body as a result of the combinations. So get to your doctor to take steps to change, wean, or eliminate offending drugs to find your cure. Or even better, if you can find one, get to a private-practice pharmacist who helps people wean off drugs to solve their health problems. Thanks to a glut of super powerful prescription drugs, this is one of the hottest new fields for pharmacists.

So no matter what the symptoms, problems or “disease” you suffer from, always remember to eliminate gluten as your potential cure-and suspect your prescriptions as the potential cause of your suffering. If you don’t, your suffering can go on for years, decades, or your entire life!

GALLBLADDER, GAS AND BLOATING? by Dr. Bruce West

Are you chronically nauseous? How about constipated? Or constipated with diarrhea? Or do you constantly have the uurps and burps-where fatty foods repeat on you and even get back into your throat? Are you chronically bloated with gas and pressure? Or have you even had one or more “gallbladder attacks?”

These are all symptoms of gallbladder problems-including a sluggish gallbladder and a congested liver. But take heart. The miracle treatment of the month is betaine. Betaine is one of the factors in the B vitamin complex. And the richest source is found in growing beet leaves and their juice. Betaine is known as a lipotrophic agent-it aids in fat digestion and metabolism.

Standard Process makes a product called A-F Betafood. It contains vitamins A and F complexes combined with Betafood, which contains betaine from beet leaf juice. The vitamins A and F thin the bile, while Betafood flushes the bile route-getting it moving again. Without adequate nutrition like this, your bile becomes thick like cream. Thick, congested bile does not flow smoothly, and eventually clogs, forming gravel of even gallstones. When this happens, you are in trouble with all the symptoms listed-including an eventual, inevitable gallbladder attack.

When you have chronic gallbladder problems such as these, you are also sure to be toxic. Aside from helping you break down fats for digestion, smoothly flowing bile is a major detoxifier. Toxins are picked up and carried in your blood to your liver. Your liver is like your car’s filter. The liver removes the toxins from the blood and dumps them into the bile. The bile then carries them to the intestines for elimination.

So if you have these problems, be sure to take 2-4 A-F Betafood capsules with water at mealtime. This protocol will help you thin bile that has become thick and less viscous. It will also help you flush the bile route from the liver through the gallbladder. Once this is accomplished, your symptoms will begin to disappear. And better yet, you most likely will be able to save yourself from a gallbladder attack, or worse-removal of your gallbladder.

And take special note-millions of Americans suffer from celiac disease and do not know it. Celiac disease is an intolerance to the protein gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Some of the symptoms of celiac disease mimic those of gallbladder problems. So make sure to eliminate gluten from your diet for at least 30 days to determine if you suffer from hidden celiac disease. If gluten is your problem, you will be better within days of eliminating it from your diet. Untold thousands of people who had undiagnosed celiac disease have had their gallbladder removed-only to find out that their symptoms continued after surgery!

Avoid Symptom Treatment

If you have already had your gallbladder removed, remember that surgery simply corrects the symptom and does nothing about the cause. Your sluggish and congested bile will remain a problem, even after gallbladder surgery. After gallbladder removal, you still need to use the A-F Betafood protocol to improve your bile flow and fat digestion and metabolism, as well as to insure proper detoxification and removal of toxins from your body.

And once you start to clean up your liver/gallbladder/bile pathways, you can use a once-or twice-a-year gallbladder cleanse to make your protocol even more powerful. A gallbladder cleanse involves mixing 2 cups of shredded, raw, preferably organic, ripe beets with the juice of a lemon and 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin, first-pressed olive oil. Eat this mixture between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner daily for 10 days.

It is best to do everything you can to avoid having your gallbladder removed. Too many older adults have had this procedure start a downward medical spiral that often leads to debilitation and even death. Remember that simply having a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) only treats the symptoms. And the only medical treatments for gallbladder problems consist of a low-fat diet, drugs to mask symptoms, or surgery. It is all ineffective, sometimes dangerous, and expensive (gallbladder and knee surgeries keep most hospitals financially afloat).

Uurps, burps, gas, bloating, nausea, pain, constipation, diarrhea, and gallbladder attacks? Use A-F Betafood and a gallbladder flush to thin the bile and flush your liver and gallbladder-and put an end to being sick and in pain. Treating the cause-and all without side effects of any kind. Now that’s a protocol, and the miracle, secret treatment of the month. To order A-F Betafood or any of the products mentioned in this article, contact us.
