Goal Setting vs. New Year’s Resolutions

I’m not a fan of setting New Year’s’ Resolutions.  I believe it is better to set goals, SMART Goals, goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable/Accountable, Realistic, Time (linked to time).

I am also not a fan of setting huge, outrageous, unrealistic, unattainable goals. Don’t get me wrong, you should stretch yourself but, don’t set yourself up for failure. Transition your habit of over-promising what you’ll accomplish in the New Year to developing well thought out SMART Goals.  I am not talking about creating a list of things to do or accomplish. I am talking about solid, well thought out, do-able SMART Goals. Invest some time on this.  Invest a lot of time on it! The more time and energy you put into your SMART Goals, the more specific you are, the more you’ll accomplish.

Once you have your SMART Goals written out you have to put them in motion by developing a step by step plan to guide your actions and support your effort.  You do this by creating a personalized action plan. Your personalized action plan should include: 1)  action steps, 2) tracking and 3) accountability.

I came to the realization that my life in 10 years would not be any different than my life today if I didn’t start consciously making decisions that would enable me to get where I want to go. I realized I needed a system in place to assist me in developing my SMART goals and keeping them in the forefront of my mind so that I could accomplish them. I do this by living the OolaLife – That state of awesomeness when your life is balanced and growing in the seven key areas of life; the 7 F’s of Oola (fitness, finance, family, field, faith, friends, and fun.)

There are three simple steps to the OolaLife: The Wheel, The Plan, The Path.

The OolaLife is a simple, but not easy, system created by The OolaGuys, Dr. Dave Braun (OolaSeeker) and Dr. Troy Amdahl (OolaGuru). The OolaGuys are co-authors of the International Best Selling book Oola: Find Balance in an Unbalanced World. Dr. Dave and Dr. Troy are renowned experts in a proper work-life balance.
