There is a great likelihood that you either The Fluknow someone that caught the flu or got the flu yourself.  See the news clip that just came out today on the CDC prediction that we may not have seen our peak yet. Please listen to the stats she references of the number of people dying and even children being impacted. The good news is, I have a tip to assist you in this process.

The Flu Season is not over yet according to CDC…

There is debate over whether one should get a flu shot or even if the flu shot causes people to get the flu. Like everyone, I have an opinion on this.  I believe the reason the flu shot becomes detrimental to a body, and someone may actually get the flu even with the shot, is due to stress levels and stress hormones impacting that individual.  When stress levels are not in check, and whose are lately, it WILL have an impact on one’s immune system.  So the body receiving the flu vaccine intended to prepare you to fight the flu, may not have the strength it needs to utilize the good behind the vaccine.

I recommend to my clients that they work with me on getting their stress hormones in balance BEFORE flu season. Is Your Excess Weight Really Your Fault? scale

I’ll be the first to take responsibility for proper eating habits.  However, if you have struggled with excess weight, I think it would be a great disservice if you were not aware of some of the latest research.  In particular, science is now proving that some of your weight concerns may be epigenetic factors or impacted by changes in your daily routine that can make a significant difference for you.

Yes, it is true that it’s important to make good food choices. And that can be challenging at certain times of the year, at certain events, and even when there are factors in your life that are out of your immediate control.  However, one of the biggest issues working against many people for weight and metabolism is hormone imbalance. These can be brought on by factors such as stress and epigenetics.

Stress is a tremendous factor in properly managing weight and metabolism. Hormones do a lot to control multiple communications and pathways in multiple body systems. When stress is out of control, weight management will be a challenge. Some of the main stress hormones which you have probably heard of such as cortisol and adrenaline will literally be demanded by the body to get you through stressful times.  As these hormones compete to bring on the necessary energy to face the stress, cravings for carbohydrates may increase and these sugars will only provide a temporary fix.  And shortly after, the crash will hit from the sugar “high” ending.   Not to mention, some processed foods are made with ingredients that will increase the addiction to the processed food you are eating, requiring you to eat more to be satisfied.  

One recommendation for addressing cortisol and adrenaline imbalances is the Tahiti Vacation Relaxation Exercise.  It only takes 15 minutes and equates to four hours of sleep!  And NO, “Type A” people, it is not recommended that you do this twice a day to equal your eight hours of sleep rather than actually sleeping eight hours.  However, this is a maintenance program and supports the sleep you should be trying to get.  It supports proper rest to help the hormones get to a more balanced way of operating, and can lead to more restful sleep as you continue to practice it.  Until the actual source of the stress is addressed, however, through your body chemistry, your sleep may go unchanged and your weight will stay the same or even increase.

Epigenetics also has a tremendous amount to do with weight maintenance.  Be sure to check out my prior blog on epigenetics to get some background on this topic.  Basically, lifestyle events that may have happened to you or your ancestors cause epigenetic “locks” that prevent your weight and metabolism hormones from properly communicating. Let me give you an example.

You would probably agree that it would not be uncommon for an ancestor of yours to have experienced a famine or shortage of food in their lifetime, right?   Just think back four generations ago and you will see that it's very possible for a famine or shortage of food to be in your family history from another part of the world. It is extremely common to find that stressors such as these created epigenetic locks that caused weight and metabolism hormones to operate differently than they were originally intended to operate.  Literally locking down the genes from transcribing correctly.   And what if because of that food shortage, your ancestor had to teach his body how to manage food and calories differently than you might have to today in our modern world?  And what if that ancestor passed that information to you through your genes? See how this works?

An example like the one above is why I ask the question, “Is your excess weight really your fault”?  Did you have a family member in your history that set your hormones on a path that communicates to your brain that you are never satisfied or are always hungry?  This might also come into play with addictions to drugs, alcohol and even sexual addictions.  The great news is that this incorrect hormone communication, when epigenetically caused, can be greatly supported for correction in a BodyTalk session. We do this by applying priority based healthcare.

Another example could be a toxin or body chemistry imbalance you were exposed to or an ancestor was exposed to that locked your genes from properly transcribing the code to tell your cells how to create themselves in a healthy manner.  See my article on toxins and your weight.

So there you have it.  You are not overweight simply because you eat too much and are a couch potato.  While this is true for some, obesity has not been treated as a serious health issue but rather has been blamed on the overweight individual.  So let’s address that now...research shows that metabolic hormone imbalances make people have low energy and increases their appetite.  The biology underneath all this is driving the lazing and overeating behaviors.   There are even six month olds that are obese.  Having said this, isn’t it encouraging to know that you don’t have to beat yourself up anymore?  There may be a very real metabolic reason for your condition.

Are Toxic Chemicals Making You Fat?

Most people agree that toxins can easily be found in places like the landfill, chemical plants and a sewer system.  And since you are a normal person, you could not possibly be toxic because you don’t hang out in those areas on a regular basis, right?  But how many of you know that you can pick up toxins anywhere; from a food you have eaten to something you inhaled or something you put on your body like chemicals in your daily routine?  In fact, most women put over 80 chemicals on or in their body before they leave their home in the morning!  Soaps, deodorants, make-up, shampoos and conditioners just to name a few.  And some of the most common toxins impacting our bodies today can be found in our beloved coffee drinks!  Not saying coffee is toxic, just saying it is a common ingested item where some of my clients have found toxins that we needed to clear.

These chemicals get into your bloodstream and can cause harm to many different body systems from the respiratory system to the lymphatic system, the digestive system and on and on.  You might have experienced the obvious toxin when you ate a meal and found yourself ill after eating.  The toxin could be from any number of chemicals used to cook the foods like toxic oils, toxic cookware or even food grown using chemicals and fertilizers.  If you only eat organic, that is a great step to avoiding toxins.  However, beware, even organic farms may receive run-off from other farms and that is where a toxin could still be picked up.  

These chemicals may lock into different body parts, organs and especially the endocrine glands.  These glands are responsible for communicators that we call hormones.  They regulate thousands of body functions and especially the communication to the brain telling your body whether you are satisfied or whether you feel like you are starving even when you just ate!

What if your weight maintenance journey has been locked down by these chemicals or endocrine disruptors, in particular, one called an Obesogen?  Yep, that’s right.  A chemical you picked up without even knowing it can lock down your hormones and send improper signaling to the brain.  These can cause endocrine system disruptions, immune and nervous system damage, reproductive and developmental harm.  Did you know that sometimes it is not even about the toxins you were exposed to, but also the toxins your ancestors may have been exposed to that created an epigenetic marker and passed through to you?  Perhaps an ancestor from a war that was exposed to nerve gas or a pesticide chemical from farming. Could this be the reason your weight and metabolism have been off for years with little to no success?

How do know if you have a toxin?  Some signs may include feeling tired and fatigued, skin rashes, headaches, chronic mucous production, joint pain, a weakened immune system just to name a very small list.  This would be a clue.  Watch this Purification video to learn more about what kind of toxins you might be exposed to on a given day and the full list of impact to your body.

How Much Sugar Do You Really Eat?

You might be surprised to learn the foods that “qualify” as sugar in your diet.  If I were to ask most people how much sugar they eat, they would consider the candy or soda they consumed in the last week and more than likely assume their diet is low in sugar.  But what about the rest of your diet that you may not categorize as sugar?

Consider that our consumption of fructose (a.k.a. High Fructose Corn Syrup) has doubled in the past 30 years and has increased 6-fold in the last century.  It’s cheap and easy to hide in foods and takes the place of the flavor of “fats” in our food which allowed the Fat-Free diet craze.  That’s why those Fat-Free foods taste so good!  You will find it (high fructose corn syrup) in yogurt, breads, frozen pizza, pasta, cereal bars, jam, soda, cereal, boxed macaroni & cheese, salad dressing, tomato sauces, applesauce, canned fruit etc.   

Now let me ask the question again.  How much sugar do you really eat?  I encourage you to watch the video below regarding how to address purifying your body of sugars and other toxins in 21 days.  In this video, you will see a shocking example of the amount of sugar you may actually be eating in a given day!

When you eat too much of the kinds of foods referenced above you may start to experience:

The Clock Begins: Lung Time 3 AM - 5 AM

In my prior article titled, Is Your Hose Kinked?” I referenced the 24-hour body clock. If you missed this article click on the link provided. You really do have an internal clock that carries out specific tasks within the body at the same time every day. Almost like your body’s “in-box” of daily routines. And, like your day at the office, your body may have an emergency or two that gets thrown in your day. Something you didn’t plan. This could look like a food you are allergic to such as wheat. Your body still needs to work on its regularly scheduled daily task but eating the wrong foods or food you have an intolerance to may cause your body to have to go deal with that “emergency” instead of completing the scheduled task. This is how blockages, build-ups and stagnation can cause an organ’s meridian pathway to be clogged. This can lead to a host of issues.

This month we will start with an exercise for the lungs. The lungs start your body’s internal clock activities each day from 3 AM to 5 AM.  The lungs have a number of key functions, but there may be some you are not familiar with such as:

  • help to circulate the blood
  • distribute fluids and blood to
  • nourish the skin, generate grief
  • help you release the past
  • give you the ability to speak with a clear voice.

Now, these may not sound like functions you have heard of before and that is because they do not come from western medicine philosophy. We are looking at them from an energy perspective.

If you are someone that wakes up at night during 3 a.m. to 5 a.m., your lungs may be telling you something. Some of the signs of lung patterns that may reflect irregularities in lung energy or stress are:

shortness of breath, sweat easily, tiredness, cough, tickle in the throat, weak voice, dry mouth, dry skin, aversion to cold, someone who worries, is anxious, overworks to keep busy or can’t lie down, asthma, someone that has excessive consumption for greasy or spicy foods.

As mentioned previously, there are a number of ways to address an imbalance in the lungs one of which is an exercise called Qi Gong, similar to exercises like Yoga or Tai Chi. It may take a few days or even a couple of weeks before you notice a change, but give it a try and see if you start sleeping through lung time or are at least able to fall back asleep if you do wake up briefly. So maybe you are thinking, “I wake up multiple times during the night, what am I supposed to do if it is not during 3 am – 5 am?” Don’t worry. We are going to do a series on this so rest assured we are going to cover the other organs in the body. Preparing for Surgery?

Ah yes, the end of the year, that time when you consider the surgery you put off all year waiting until things slowed down in your schedule.  Now your deductible is met on your insurance and the holidays are upon us so you better fit it in!

Some of you may think that as a natural health practitioner I am against surgery. Ironically, my Dad was a surgeon. He helped a lot of people because of what he was trained to do. I do not have anything against surgery especially after a serious trauma like a car accident where seconds and minutes count. The items below are best addressed before surgery, but there is much we can do to bring the body back to balance if you’ve already had your procedure.

Several things can play into your surgery that can leave a lasting impact for months and even years.  A few have been noted here with some thoughts on how to properly prepare.

  1. Effects of Anesthesia
  2. Impact on your gut microbiome
  3. Impact on your skin microbiome
  4. Scar tissue and adhesions
  5. Back pain
  6. Emotions out of balance

 

Here are a few things to consider in order to make your surgery as smooth as possible.  First, be sure to follow all the advice of your surgeon’s team.   They have their reasons for doing all the things that they do to make your surgery experience as positive as possible. Don't take chances, but know that there may be some after effects.  The good news is these can be addressed as long as you prepare in advance.

  • Effects of Anesthesia and CO2:  Thank God for some tools that help keep the pain levels down. The days of biting a bullet are over, however, these tools can leave a lasting effect.  Be prepared and be patient. You may feel groggy or foggy for more than just a few hours after surgery. This is normal, generally, and drinking a lot of water will help your body flush some of this from your system. I highly recommend a technique we use in our BodyTalk Access class called Body Chemistry. It is specifically designed to help the body deal with the effects of intolerances to chemicals etc. If you don't know the BodyTalk Access routine be sure to check out the next class offering. You will find yourself using it for many more opportunities than just surgery;  including possibly surgery prevention depending on the issue.  However, in the absence of the full BodyTalk Access routine knowledge, try the first technique taught in the class called Cortices.  This is safe to use before and after your procedure.  You may also find when you have abdominal type surgery, that CO2 is used to pump up your abdomen so the surgeon can have a clear view to work. These can be very painful after surgery especially when the bubbles get lodged in areas like the clavicle or collarbone. Preparing for these in advance is easy with a BodyTalk surgery prep session with a trained practitioner. In these sessions, your practitioner will prepare your body to dispel these gases in a more efficient manner. The sessions can be performed in person and long distance via video conference as well.

 

  • Impact to Gut Microbiome:  Generally after surgery, depending on the kind, you may be required to have a good bowel movement before you leave the hospital.  And if for any reason you were required to take an antibiotic pre or post-op, it's important for you to know that the antibiotic can actually impact your gut movement for well up to a year beyond the surgery.  This may mean your regular bowel activity looks different, but generally, regular bowel activity is best at 3 bowel movements a day.  It's important to consider a good probiotic and good fiber after surgery. And easing your digestive system into action is the best way to start.  Consider a smoothie for breakfast in the mornings including a good probiotic and good fiber. Both of these can be recommended by my office. It's important to note that not all probiotics are the same. And you will want to switch them up about every 2 to 3 months or they can actually have a negative impact on your microbiome. Another good way to move your microbiome to a good space is through the Body Chemistry technique in the BodyTalk Access class previously mentioned.    One of the best things to move your gut microbiome to a better space is a BodyTalk session with a trained practitioner who understands how to prep your body prior to your surgery.

 

  • Impact on your Skin Microbiome:  Ah, the Hibiclens.  It's a special soap that helps protect you from bacteria that your body could be exposed to while in surgery at the hospital. I recently came across this when I had a surgery. The good news is I had BodyTalk Access and a knowledge of how to improve the good critters that keep my skin in good working order to protect my body.   This soap is very powerful and will strip your microbiome of anything and everything. Again, all for the right reason. The best thing I recommend is to get plenty of vitamin D from the sun, consider support for your skin such as Vitamin D supplement (gel) to put on incision points, essential oils such as Frankincense and Lavender several days after and perform the Body Chemistry technique from the BodyTalk Access routine. Not to mention BodyTalk surgery prep sessions.

 

  • Scar Tissue:  Scar tissue or adhesions are what can be left behind from a surgery. It's basically where skin on the outside or muscle and other tissues on the inside form together almost as if they were glued. If these are in delicate areas they can cause restriction in movement.  In a BodyTalk surgery prep session, we actually have a technique specifically for scar tissue and adhesions. It not only helps to address the look and feel of old scars, but it can also help your body better prepare for healing of new incision points and access points from your surgery.  Sometimes there can even be emotional concerns locked up in these scars.   Consider if there was a lot of emotional energy around a surgery that perhaps you didn't want to have. Perhaps the loss of a limb or other body part like a uterus. These kinds of incidents can leave a lasting physical and emotional impression and can be prepared for through a BodyTalk session with a trained BodyTalk practitioner for surgery clearing and consider obtaining some essential oils for supporting the incision areas and emotions afterward.

 

  • Back Pain:  If you have had any kind of surgery in the abdominal area lately, you may have experienced back pain that you did not realize could be related to your surgery. There are multiple energy pathways that run through your abdominal area which I call energy meridians. Many years ago, I had a procedure done through my navel. A few months later I started to experience back pain. It was then that I realized the surgeon cut through what is called the kidney meridian. I didn't know this at the time, but I now know to look for it in my clients. An adhesion can form near the point of incision and cut off the flow of energy through an energy meridian. This can link to other ailments in the body and to other organs and most doctors would not connect this simply because it comes from a different aspect of medicine.   So in my case, I worked with a certain specialist to have a procedure done through the abdomen. And six months later I started to have low back pain which would send most people to an orthopedic or back specialist. Neither of these two professionals are generally familiar with energy pathways. As I learned about energy pathways in my studies as a BodyTalk practitioner, I was able to connect that abdominal surgery scar to my low back pain.   As indicated above, when we cleared the scar blockage the energy could flow again and my kidney meridian was no longer impacted.  This meridian will impact your back among other areas. Before your next abdominal surgery, be sure to have a BodyTalk surgery pre and post session with a trained practitioner to prepare your body to make the most of a very invasive but sometimes necessary procedure.

 

  • Emotions:  Never underestimate the power of emotions. Consider that all your body parts are a community. In fact, there is a Bible verse that talks about one body many parts. While that is referencing the Christian Community, it also is a phenomenal correlation to the body. So if you consider that you're having some sort of abdominal surgery and perhaps an organ is about to be removed like the gallbladder.   Consider the other organs around the gallbladder. The gallbladder is being removed probably because it's not working well. Maybe it’s “stinky”.  Remember, it's an organ going bad. Some of its neighboring organs may want it to move on. Kind of like if your neighbor next door piles trash heaps without having them moved on to the city dump. While some organs may want the gallbladder to move on, other organs like the liver which is it’s partner organ, will actually grieve the gallbladder leaving. It's no different than two police officers that are partners for many years. They have each other's back. They help each other out in times of need. And then one day the gallbladder is removed. Do not underestimate the need for that liver to be supported; emotionally and physically.   I'm sure I don't have to say much about a woman who has had a hysterectomy. You cannot underestimate the power of her emotions going through that process of losing that body part. A body talk session can prepare the body for removal of body parts and the addition of new parts such as transplants of any kind. Again consider the neighborhood. The old neighbors need to prepare and welcome the new body part.   One might also consider essential oils and flower essences for emotional support.

Priority Based Health Care

Does your doctor determine your most important health priority before coming up with an action plan?  Or does he/she take note of your symptoms and treat you like the last person with the same list of symptoms?  Many people that have chronic health conditions or conditions that the doctors are unable to diagnose may feel like they just are supposed to live with their ailment.  That is not necessarily the case when your health care is priority based.

So what is Priority Based Health Care and what does that mean to you?  It is looking at your health on all dimensions regardless of symptoms and then allowing the body to tell us it’s priority for healing.  Pretty cool, huh?  So how does the body do this you might ask?  Well, our body is talking all the time...are you listening?  Aches, pains, congestion, emotional ups and downs, gurgles and twinges are all signs of your body talking.  You just need the right person that can help you translate.

In sessions, if your desired ailment to get worked on does not surface,  it is NOT your body’s priority to be worked on or cleared.  That is priority based health care.  It does not mean that you do not have that ailment addressed in the session, it just means it was not the root of your ailment.  Picture a dandelion in your yard.  You don’t cut the top off, do you?  Of course not, unless you want to see it surface again!  The same is true for your health and wellness.  If you want to see the ailment no longer surface, you have to get to the root.

Through a science called Applied Kinesiology (a.k.a. muscle testing), your body can tell you the frequencies that help bring it into balance.   Your body has the ability to detect when a positive or negative frequency is near it.  The right side of your neck may be hurting and through the session, we will determine that it all started about the same time your 14-year-old teenager decided to make wrong choices and the two of you got in a disagreement and your anger grew. You know, the proverbial pain in the neck!

Applied kinesiology (AK) is a method to determine priority based on the belief that various muscles are linked to particular organs and glands, and that specific muscle weakness can signal distant internal problems such as nerve damage, reduced blood supply, chemical imbalances or other organ or gland problems. Practitioners contend that by correcting this muscle weakness, you can help heal a problem in the associated internal organ.  They key is how you correct that muscle weakness.   

I don’t actually need science to prove this.  Don’t you feel good when someone pays you a compliment and feel bad when someone insults you?  Our words, our emotions, the food we eat, the supplements we take etc. all have either a positive or negative impact (frequency) on our body.  

As a trained practitioner in priority based healthcare, we will use tools like muscle testing to get to the root of your ailment whether it is a painful neck, jittery stomach, high cholesterol or diabetes.  One never knows where the root cause of an ailment may take us but it is nice to know that your body has all the answers you need for healing, you just need to listen!
